In the 2006 movie The Holiday, Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz’s character) was instantly taken with Iris Simpkins’ (Kate Winslet’s character) idyllic country cottage in Surrey. The little cottage had a cosy, warm glow often depicted in storybooks – a far-cry from the extravagant mansion Woods had in California which boasted of remote-controlled gates, a pool, and a personal movie theatre. A lot of people are like Woods to some extent: enchanted with houses with a storybook quality, and are comfortable and intimate – something more back-to-basics, where they do not have to constantly wrestle with the lure of technology which has already overtaken the lives of the majority of people around the world. There are people who want to find quiet inspiration the moment they step inside their homes, and storybook-inspired houses never fail to bring out the whimsies that people have.
Sadly though, realestate provisions these days are too cosmopolitan and modern. There are not a lot of residential options for the likes of Tasha Tudor in mind – creative, whimsical and fiercely old-fashioned. Storybook-inspired homes are not easy to find so if you wish to fulfil a lifelong dream of having one, hiring the services of a realestate agent will definitely be a big help.
These homes are often centuries old and despite the decline of the real estate scene in the last five years, these special houses remained pricey, largely because of their historical value. In addition, most of their owners were just not interested in selling them because it’s not likely that people will enter any neighbourhood and find the same design lined up in a neat row for an overall cohesive appearance.
Storybook homes were built for an era which a lot of people had already forgotten; their rarity is what makes them exceedingly special and valuable. Aside from being incredibly rare, these homes are often tucked away in quaint little hamlets where archaic traditions still thrive and modern conveniences are somewhat alien – these areas are somewhat exclusive and protected.
If you are not ready to pack up and live like a person stuck in the nineteenth century, perhaps it would be better for you to just have your dream storybook home built and get your agent to find the perfect neighbourhood where your Harry or Beatrix Potter-inspired house will be welcomed by the community. Realestate agents know the protocols of most communities and can easily find a location where your storybook home can be constructed with no protests. Once this concern is properly addressed, you can go wild in choosing the best architect and contractors who can beautifully build that storybook-inspired home that you have always dreamed of.
